Modder Enables Hidden Split-Screen Support in Halo: Campaign Evolved on PC

2 outlets8/8/2026

The short version

A day after Halo: Campaign Evolved's full rollout, a modder found a way to activate split-screen co-op on PC — a feature Halo Studios left out of the launch build despite it being present on Xbox and PS5.

via PC Gamer

Halo: Campaign Evolved launched on PC without local split-screen support, even though the feature is available on Xbox and PS5. PC players were limited to online co-op only, a decision PC Gamer called an odd omission given the growing use of living room PCs and local game streaming.

A modder named Jpurd123 has released a tool called 'Halo Campaign Evolved Split-screen Coop' on Nexus Mods that activates code already present in the PC version to enable local split-screen play. According to the mod's description, the underlying support was already built into the game, but Halo Studios simply didn't turn it on. The mod was reportedly made with AI assistance.

Once installed, split-screen can be triggered using a keyboard shortcut before starting a session. Comments on the mod's page suggest it works reasonably well as long as users follow the setup instructions precisely.

The mod comes with several limitations. It currently only supports two-player split-screen, despite four-player co-op being a major feature of the remake. It has only been tested on the Steam version of the game, meaning players using PC Game Pass or the Microsoft Store version may not be able to use it. Users have also reported that split-screen only functions properly when both players use controllers; mixing keyboard-and-mouse with a controller causes the keyboard to take over both screens.

PC Gamer noted that because the mod relies on AI-generated code, its future reliability and potential improvements remain uncertain. Still, the outlet described it as encouraging that useful community fixes like this are already appearing within a day of the remake's full release, contrasting it with the much longer wait fans experienced for split-screen workarounds in the Master Chief Collection, which also launched on PC without split-screen support.
