Valve officially launched the Steam Frame VR headset on Sept. 14, 2026, with the 256GB model priced at $1,059 and the 1TB version at $1,299. Both models include two controllers, 16GB RAM, and a copy of Half-Life: Alyx. The headset runs on SteamOS and supports streaming games from a PC or standalone play via its Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. However, neither model includes a power supply, which must be purchased separately for $29.

Preorders are managed through a randomized reservation system. Users must sign up by Sept. 17 for a chance to secure a unit, with reservations and waitlists determined after the deadline. Valve will notify users via email starting Sept. 18, with shipments expected to begin soon after. The headset is available in the U.S., Canada, EU, UK, Australia, and via third-party logistics in Asia.

The Steam Frame faces challenges including component shortages and high costs, with prices exceeding initial expectations. While it offers features like foveated streaming and ARM-based standalone gaming via Valve's FEX compatibility layer, reviews note limitations in battery life (around 1 hour for standalone use) and controller tracking accuracy compared to competitors like the Meta Quest 3. Additional accessories, such as ergonomic straps and third-party camera upgrades, further increase the total cost.
